Rick: A Big and Tall Order

Rick sauntered into ATL Tailor early this past year, and we could immediately see why it was proving difficult for him to find much bespoke clothing elsewhere. Namely, he was huge; 6’8” and 290 lbs. Rick was looking for a suit to wear as the best man at his brother’s wedding the following month, and the few off-the-rack suits he had seen at the Big and Tall clothing store did not supply the elegance he was looking for.

Having worked with many big and tall customers in the past, ATL Tailor’s team of veterans knew exactly what Rick needed: a suit that’s not just a blown-up version of a standard-size garment, but instead something actually meant for a big and tall fit. That meant details like higher lapels, double vents on the back of the jacket, and a slightly higher button stance to elongate the torso and create a slimming effect. All of these details help to make the suit comfortable and natural-feeling specifically for big and tall individuals.

There are also specific fabric choices that are particularly useful for big and tall suits: go with something medium-weight that will provide structure without adding bulk, choose a subtle pattern to enhance height and slim the figure, etc. At the same time, we made sure to choose a neutral gray color that wouldn’t steal any fire from the groom when Rick was on stage at the wedding, 6’8” or not.

Most of these big-and-tall-specific details are glossed over by the manufacturers who sell the off-the-rack stuff, which is why Rick made a great decision by coming to us.

Just like with any of our $899 Suit customers, we measured Rick’s proportions and got to work designing. From that point, it only took us around 6 days to finish the garment. When Rick came in to try it on, he was extremely impressed with the results.

ATL Tailor would like to send a message to all big and tall suit shoppers out there: off-the-rack suitmakers, and even many bespoke tailors, do not know how to make a really good big and tall suit. Come to ATL and let us show you what you’ve been missing.
