Tai lives in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, but he was traveling for business in Atlanta when he came into ATL Tailor. He explained to our head tailor that it was his last week in Atlanta (and the US) before flying back to Vietnam for the foreseeable future, and he wanted to take some of our Southern US fashion with him when he returned to the South of his own country.
Hong, ATL’s head tailor, is originally from Vietnam as well, so she jumped at the opportunity to tackle the challenge Tai presented: design a suit that showcased Atlanta’s traditional elegance while using cool, breathable materials that would be comfortable in Vietnam’s humid climate. And, thanks to her upbringing, Hong knew just the materials to use: a linen-silk blend for the main jacket and pants material, and a moisture-wicking bemburg for the jacket’s lining.
To give the suit a more “luxurious” appearance (something Tai requested), we used a flowing olive green color that only silk can achieve. We also colored the bemberg lining a rich ruby red (a hue associated with wealth in Vietnamese culture) and patterned it with dragons (a symbol of prosperity). The color scheme was partially inspired by Tai’s favorite vest, which he brought into the shop for design inspiration.
To balance the luxury with Atlanta’s signature charm, we added features like:
- Contrasting stitching, a nod to Atlanta fashion’s emphasis on contrasting colors
- Custom embroidery reading “ATL”
- A subtle seersucker pattern, a design motif iconic of Southern fashion
As you can probably tell, a tremendous amount of thought and care was put into the design of the suit before we even started stitching. Tai was kept in the loop during every step of the design process to ensure he would be happy with the result.
Once we started the tailoring itself, the work was done fairly quickly. We were extremely happy with the result, as was Tai; what do you think?
